The Lincoln Branch of the Duluth Public Library opened in 1917 thanks to $30,000 from Andrew Carnegie. The library was the last of three Carnegie libraries built in Duluth. The Lincoln Branch served the city’s west end neighborhoods until 1990 when all library services were centralized into a new downtown location.
Two years later, the Duluth Art Institute purchased the building and continues to use it for classroom and studio space for artists. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. You can find it on West Second Street in the Lincoln Park neighborhood. The other Carnegie library building still standing in Duluth can be found about two miles east, also on West Second Street. The third Carnegie building, the West Duluth Branch, was built in 1912 and demolished in 1992.
